Early Childhood Education

YMCA Early Childhood Education

The YMCA Early Learning Center is located at Smith Memorial Methodist Church, 2703 Daniels Creek Rd. Collinsville VA 24054. The YMCA Early Learning Center provides full day preschool care with excellence and commitment to early childhood education and quality childcare. The goal of the program is to provide safe, dependable, quality child care and to enhance the development of each child through developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Program Components

The Y operates a Virginia Department of Social Services State Licensed year-round; full day early learning center for children ages 2-5 at the Collinsville YMCA. The program operates Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The center’s purpose is to always promote the well-being of the child, to give them the love and understanding they need, all while providing students with the skills that they need to be prepared to enter kindergarten. The overall goal of the program is to provide a developmentally appropriate educational experience for students in a nurturing environment.

The Collinsville YMCA Early Learning Center (ELC) was established in 1995 and has provided quality early childhood education to the children in Martinsville and Henry County for twenty years. Throughout those years hundreds of children have left the ELC ready to enter kindergarten.

A primary objective of the program is to nurture the child’s curiosity and to help them develop a love for learning. The basic concepts of colors, shapes, numbers and letters, holidays, seasonal changes, community influences, and the five senses are presented. The program also prepares the child entry into kindergarten by teaching the basic concepts of language, mathematics, and science. Reading readiness skills such as letter sounds, writing letters, numbers and complete names, rhyming, and opposite words are presented. Activities which include the use of numbers such as weighing and measuring, giving one’s birth date, phone number and address, counting and distinguishing likenesses and differences in objects, shapes, and words are also presented. The ELC uses The Creative Curriculum to guide all classroom planning and activities.

The program has 5 classrooms, (two 2 year old classes, two 3-4 year old classes and one 4-5 year old class) an air conditioned gym, playground, ball field, and an outdoor pool during the summer months. The program serves a hot breakfast, hot lunch and an afternoon snack daily (included in weekly fee).
